THE DOCUMENTATION COMMISSION AT A SUCCESSFUL CONFERENCE

We feel that we presented the right topics in exactly the right way for the right audience. In this we were confirmed again and again, by everyone present in Paris. Our open session was attended by a great number of FIAT/IFTA delegates. We presented an interesting and modern project at SVT - teleworking by archivists, Brazilian Globo TV then informed us about yet another way of moving the archivists out of the archive: by letting them think up and develop concepts for historical television programmes, etc.

During our main session, on the 25th of September, the Documentation Commission proudly let members of the Euromedia Consortium present a demonstration of their Euromedia project. At present it is the state of the art in multimedia developments within television archives. It was most interesting to hear the speech of Dr. BÙscher, of the EC, on the subject of this and other new technological possibilities. By giving a personal view of the meaning and implication of multimedia for Europe and the European situation Dr. BÙscher undoubtedly succeeded in broadening the perspective of many listeners. After Euromedia, INA filled in our afternoon session with interesting and informative updates and presentations on their latest projects concerning computerisation, facilities for researchers and copyright.

Both of these very successful sessions were organised with the help and effort of many people. First of all I would like to express my thanks to those members of the Commission who have worked especially hard to make this possible: Eva-Lis Green, co-chair of the Commission, with whom I have done all of the thinking work, as well as the planning and organising of the Documentation session; Peter Cox for his excellent chairing and moderation of the 'big' session, and Herbert Hayduck and Wolfgang Dehn for putting together the Euromedia presentation.

I would also like to thank the speakers : Nisicl²r Figueira and Agneta Forsstrùm for their most dedicated and interesting presentations during the Open Session, all speakers on the Euromedia presentation and the INA speakers at the afternoon session. And last, but certainly not least, I want to express my gratitude to INA, and in particular to Dominique Saintville and Sophie Benhalla, for the great welcome they gave us in Paris and for the 100% facilities they provided.

AnnemiekeAfter Paris 1996 the Commission will have a tough job helping to organise an equally good or even better conference in Budapest. We will give it a good try though, and hope to see you all then!

Annemieke de Jong
Chair Documentation Commission
