FIAF SUMMER SCHOOL 1998

Further to the successful participation of FIAT/IFTA members in the 1996 FIAF Summer School, organised by the National Film and TV Archive in Britain, we have again secured the possibility of our members taking part in the 1998 Summer School, which will take place in the USA.

The 1998 Summer School is being organised by the Motion Picture Department of George Eastman House and will take place at their premises in Rochester, New York State, between June 8th and 26th 1998. Once again, five places on the course will be reserved for FIAT/IFTA members.

The main focus of the Summer School is on film handling and preservation techniques, with an emphasis on practical technical training, though video is also covered. It is particularly useful for members whose archives contain large film collections, especially as this sort of training is nowadays rarely found within the television industry. The course will embrace the history and philosophy of film archiving, but instruction will focus on the conservation of moving images in general and the performance of essential activities such as acquisition, cataloguing, access, programming and management.

I have full details of the course and application forms which I will send to any FIAT/IFTA member which is interested in sending a member of its staff on this course. Please contact me at the address/phone/fax/e-mail below. Closing date for return of applications is 31st December 1997.

The fee for the three-week course is $2,000 (US dollars), which includes accommodation, most meals and all training. The FIAT/IFTA Executive Council will be pleased to consider requests for financial assistance from members who may require it. If there are more applicants than places (as happened last time) we will attempt to give priority to those applicants most in need of this training. We will also be pleased to receive applications from those who were unsuccessful last time.
