Welcome to the FIAT/IFTA World Conference 1999
"Audiovisual Archives of the New World -
A New World of Audiovisual Archiving"
Revised
August 4, 1999
On behalf of the FIAT/IFTA Executive Council, the Television Nacional de
Chile (TVN) and the 1999 Conference Organizing Committee we are happy to
welcome you to the annual FIAT/IFTA World Conference, this time in Santiago
de Chile!
Between the snow-clad peaks of the Andes and the Pacific Ocean ...
The conference is hosted by Television Nacional de Chile in Santiago and held
at the Hotel Carrera, located central in downtown Santiago. This three day conference
programme starts on Sunday October 3rd and ends with a dinner and ceremony in
the evening of Tuesday October 5th where the winners of the both awards - FIAT/
IFTA Television Archive Awards respectively The FIAT/IFTA Innovation Award -
are presented.
It is not a coincidence that FIAT/IFTA confirms itself as a world organization
on the audiovisual archiving scene by choosing Santiago as the venue for the
1999 world conference. It is already the second time Santiago is the venue
of an important FIAT/IFTA event on this continent and it is also the second
time TVN of Chile is generously hosting such an event. It is also worthwhile
noting this is the fourth time we have our world conference in one of the Americas,
this year celebrating FIAT/IFTA's 22nd anniversary. Still another reason is
the 30th anniversary in October of TVN as a successful public broadcaster i
Chile!
Open to all with an interest in audiovisual archiving
This FIAT/IFTA World Conference is as usual open to all, FIAT/IFTA-member or
not. In this issue of the FIAT/ IFTA Newsletter you will also find a first version
of the conference program as well as registration and hotel reservation forms.
Non-members who wish to receive information should contact the FIAT/IFTA office
(Adminis-
trative Coordinator Katharina Robertsson Reimer, ifta@svt.se) or check our website at the
address: http:// www.fiatifta.org. There
you will also find any update of information concerning the conference, links
to our sponsors etc.
Theme of this year's FIAT/IFTA World Conference
The theme of this year's conference, "Audiovisual Archives of the New World -
A New World of Audiovisual Archiving", will give audiovisual archivists, librarians,
academic researchers, technicians and vendors a unique opportunity to share the
presentations of interesting audiovisual archive collections as well as the continuing
presentation of the latest in digital audiovisual archiving. No to mention the
the valuable contacts you make with colleagues from all over the world. For the
first time we have had the opportunity to meet the wish of many members since
a long time to arrange a very compressed conference programme, October 3rd -
5th. That means that we can offer two paralell series or workshops on Monday
the 4th and also that all tours and special arrangements are optional and placed
after the conference.
