Welcome to the FIAT/IFTA World Conference 2000

Media Asset Management
for the 21st Century
"Content is King, Metadata is Queen
and
Archiving Reigns overall"
On behalf of the FIAT/IFTA Executive Council, the Österreichische
Rundfunk (ORF) and the 2000 Conference Organizing Committee we are
happy to welcome you to the annual FIAT/IFTA World Conference and this
year also, FIAT/IFTA General Assembly in Vienna!
"An der schönen blauen Donau ..."
The conference is hosted by the National Television of Austria - Österreichische
Rundfunk ORF in Vienna and held at the Parkhotel Schönbrunn, conveniently
located in Vienna near the Schönbrunn Palace and the ORF premises.
This four day conference programme starts on Sunday October 15th and
ends with a dinner and ceremony in the evening of Wednesday October 18th
where the winners of the FIAT/IFTA Awards - The Television Archive Award
and The Innovation Award - are presented.
We are happy to have the ORF and Vienna as host organization
and venue for this year's conference, since it confirms FIAT/IFTA as
the true World Organization on the audiovisual archiving scene - two
years ago in Florence, Italy and last year in Santiago de Chile. Another
reason for Vienna is of course celebrating the long membership of ORF
in FIAT/IFTA, since it has been a member contributing significantly to
the development of our organization and serving as an important and generous
inspiration for other audiovisual archives.
Open to all with an interest in audiovisual archiving
This FIAT/IFTA World Conference is as usual open to all, FIAT/IFTA-member
or not. In this issue of the FIAT/IFTA Newsletter - that you also will
find at our web site - you will find a first version of the conference
program as well as registration and hotel reservation forms. Non-members
who wish to receive information should contact the FIAT/IFTA office
(Administrative Coordinator Agneta Forsström, ifta@svt.se),
the local host organization ORF, Christine Politsch, archiv@orf.at)
or check our website. There you will also find the most recent update
of information concerning the conference, links to our sponsors etc.
Theme of this year's FIAT/IFTA World Conference The theme
of this year's conference, "Media Asset Management for the 21st Century
- Content is King, Metadata is Queen and Archiving reigns overall",
should be considered as a natural follow-up of the World Conference last
year in Santiago. It will certainly give audiovisual archivists, librarians,
academic researchers, technicians and vendors a unique opportunity to
share a wide range of knowhow from presentations of interesting audiovisual
archive collections to the very latest accomplishments in digital audiovisual
archiving. Not to mention the valuable opportunity to meet colleagues
from all over the world.
You will probably find the programme very compressed with
sometimes parallel plenary sessions and workshops or parallell workshop
series. This arrangement reflects the long expressed wish of many members
not to have over-long events and also make it possible to arrange an
individual conference agenda in line with personal preferences and make
it effective.

This year the venue of this very special event is the Vienna Technical
Museum. In honor of the 60th anniversary of Kaiser Franz Josefäs ascent
to the throne, a decision was made in 1908 to establish the Technical
Museum of Trade and Industry. The Museumäs collection currently comprises
the National Cabinet of Manufactured Products, the Technical Cabinet,
the Collection of Models and other collections which were united in the
Technological Cabinet in 1842.
In July of 1994 a renovation and expansion project was begun and completed
nearly three years later in March of 1997. Practically the whole building
has been redecorated and the exhibitions have been newly structured.
It is going to be a maybe unusual but impressive place for the closure
of the conference.

General Conference Information
The theme of the FIAT/IFTA World Conference and General Assembly 2000
is "Media Assset Management for the 21st Century - Content is King,
Meta Data is Queen and Archiving Reigns overall" and Vienna seems to
be quite a perfect place to discuss such a topic: being one of Europe's
cultural treasures, the city looks back on a long history and heads
towards an exciting future in the heart of Central Europe.
Introducing Vienna
The Habsburg emperors once ruled a huge empire from Vienna. The city
is still dominated by the castles and places of the imperial seat:
every year hundreds of thousands come to marvel at Schoenbrunn, the
magnificent imperial summer residence. Visit the Imperial Coach Collection,
the Palm House and the Butterfly House. Admire Belvedere Palace, the
magnificent state rooms in the Hofburg, and the imperial crown in the
Treasury. Emperor Franz Joseph ordered the demolition of the city walls
130 years ago. In their place the Ringstraße was built - the
showplace of the monarchy. Bordered by such important buildings as
the State Opera, the Museums of Fine'Arts and Natural History, Parliament,
City Hall and Vienna University.
Vienna can also been seen as the world's capital of music.
It provided a golden monument for its "Waltz King" Johann Strauss the
genius of three-four time, an inspired musician in a long line of great
composers: Haydn and Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, Mahler and Schoenberg,
all worked here. A city with splendid concert halls, such as the Golden
Hall in the Musikverein, from which the Philharmonic's New Year's Day
concert is broadcast every 1st of January. Stars from all over the world
love to appear here: in the State Opera; the Volksoper; the Konzerthaus.
Location and transportation
Vienna is the capital of Austria in the very center of Europe. A
very old and at the same time modern city with an efficient subway (U-banh),
opera (of course!), modern hotels and restaurants. Not to mention the
cosmopolitan shopping streets that would rival any in the world.
German of the very special Viennese kind is the language and English
is generally spoken in this city housing so many International Organizations
and events.
Since Vienna is in the very center of Europe, it is very close by car
or train to other capitals and metropolitan areas as Munich, Milan, Budapest,
Bratislava and Prague. For air transportation it features a large and
modern International Airport - Schwechat - only 26 km from the city and
connected by bus and commuter train to downtown Vienna. Not to forget
the exellent network of subways and streetcars all over the city.
Local time is GMT +1 hour.

Electric Currency
Electric voltage is 220 volts, 50 cycles (220v 50Hz). The use of appliances
or electric devices designed for 110V needs the use of a transformer.
Though most travel appliances like notebook computers have an auto
volt ( 110V-240V) transformer that will adapt to Austrian electricity.
Check before leaving office!
Banking/Currency/Shops open hours
Money can be exchanged in hotels, exchange bureaux and banks. Banks are
open to public between 8.00 am - 12.30 pm and 1.30 -3.00 pm, Monday
