Report from the Programming & Production Commission
Spring meeting in Tallinn
Tallinn
in May
FIAT organised a conference of public broadcasting and national archivists in
Tallin Estonia. Attendees were from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, Sweden,
Finland, Russia, Belguim, Italy, Czech Republic and Austria. The programme was
very varied with talks about Metadata, National Legal Deposit from Sven Allenson
of ALB in Sweden and the Norwegian equivalent Karl Erik Andersen from NAA. Eva
Lis Green from SVT, Rainer Kellerhals from Techmath, and Peter Dusek from ORF
all talked about progress in the Digital Domain.
There where also interesting presentations from Henry Lindquist about Film
Preservation and the impact of widescreen broadcast on archive material.
Sue Malden talked about Guidance for Selection Policy for Audio visual archives
and also gave a second talk about how to promote and market your archive.
The audience of about 150 archivists seemed to find the conference a most
useful opportunity to gain information and also to network with other workers
from the different archives of the Baltic and the rest of Europe.
FIAT Programming & Production Commission
The chair of the FIAT P&P Commission Sue Malden arranged for their meeting to
coincide with this conference in Tallinn. The main work of this meeting of the
commission was to act as the prejury of the FIAT
television archive awards. We spent considerable time evaluating the many
entries for the award this year, shortlisting the three finalists and selecting
the specific winner of the innovation Award.
The programmes selected were from the Czech Republic "Censured Dreams"; SWR
in Germany for 100 years of Germany and from TVN in Chile for a documentary
on the rise of Pinochet and Chile under Pinochet. The winner of the innovation
award was from NRK, Norway entitled "In Praise of Weather". It was particularly
difficult this year to make a selection as many of the entries had naturally
been looked at 20th Century and therefore presented us with many very similar
programmes.
The other work undertaken by the commission on this occasion was to further
plan our contribution to the Vienna Conference, and also to begin the outline
for improving Press & PR for FIAT.
The Programme & Production Commission has just welcomed two new members Phillipe
Van Meerbeck from VRT, Belguim and Robeto Rossetto from RAI, Italy.
They join:
Berit Donjem from NRK, Norway
Vit Charous from CT, Czech Republic,
Dominique Saintville from INA, France
Alicia Contessa from TVC, Spain
Karl Maier from SWR, Germany
Sara Harb from Cinemateca del Caribe, Colombia
Amira Arratia Fernandez from TVN in Chile
The Chair is Sue Malden from BBC, UK
